Development tools

Microsoft Visual Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE) from Microsoft.

Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system developed by Microsoft.

Microsoft Web Platform Installer (Web PI) is a simple, free tool that automates the installation of Microsoft’s entire Web Platform.

Fiddler is an HTTP debugging proxy server application written by Eric Lawrence, formerly a Program Manager on the Internet Explorer team at Microsoft.

Windows PowerShell is Microsoft’s task automation framework, consisting of a command-line shell and associated scripting language built on top of .NET Framework.

Visual Studio extensions

ReSharper is a refactoring and productivity extension by JetBrains that extends native functionality of Microsoft Visual Studio 2003, 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2012.

Web Essentials – adds many useful features to Visual Studio for web developers.

Collapse recursively collapses selected nodes in the Solution Explorer tool window.

Operating system

Windows 8 is the current release of the Windows operating system, produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, tablets, and home theater PCs.

Windows 7 is an operating system produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops,netbooks, tablet PCs, and media center PCs.

Google Chrome is a freeware web browser developed by Google that uses the WebKit layout engine.

Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser developed for Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux (including Android) coordinated by Mozilla Corporation and Mozilla Foundation.

Internet Explorer (formerly Microsoft Internet Explorer and Windows Internet Explorer, commonly abbreviated IE or MSIE) is a series of graphical web browsers developed by Microsoft and included as part of the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems, starting in 1995.

LastPass is an online password manager and form filler that makes web browsing easier and more secure.

Launchy is a free windows utility designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.

µTorrent is a free-of-charge, ad-supported, closed source BitTorrent client owned by BitTorrent, Inc.

7-Zip is an open source file archiver.

FileZilla is free and cross-platform FTP software, consisting of FileZilla Client and FileZilla Server.

 Adobe Reader enables users to view and print PDF files but has negligible PDF creation capabilities.

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is an antivirus software (AV) product that provides protection against different types of malware such as computer viruses, spyware, rootkits and Trojan horses.

Paint.NET is a proprietary freeware raster graphics editor program for Microsoft Windows, developed on the .NET Framework.

Skype is a proprietary Voice over IP service and software application.

Total Commander is an Orthodox File Manager (OFM) for Windows, Windows CE, Windows Mobile, and Android.

VLC media player (informally just VLC) is a highly portable free and open-source cross-platform media player and streaming media server written by the VideoLAN project.

Fences is a software utility for Windows that helps to organize icons on the desktop.

Notepad++ is a text editor and source code editor for Windows. It aims to be a lightweight and robust editor for a variety of programming and scripting languages. One advantage of Notepad++ over the built-in Windows text editor Notepad, is that Notepad++ supports tabbed editing, which allows working with multiple open files. Notepad++ opens big files significantly faster and can be used as Windows Notepad replacement.

SoapUI is an open source web service testing application for service-oriented architectures (SOA). Its functionality covers web service inspection, invoking, development, simulation and mocking, functional testing, load and compliance testing.

  1. In my opinion you could add some command line / scripting tools for automating some repeatable tasks. Powershell, ruby, csscript, batch files etc.
